Years 3-9 Literacy
Students typically find spelling, reading, punctuation or reading comprehension are challenging and hence may like to consider gaining help with their literacy skills. Assistance can be provided in preparing students for annual NAPLAN testing in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Homework tasks are routinely set to strengthen the student’s understanding of concepts explored in the sessions. Students often work on developing their skills in how to structure and write short pieces of writing involving various genres (e.g. informative, persuasive and creative), the construction of a poem or a response to a reading comprehension exercise.
Specialist tuition in Literacy for Students with Diagnosed Dyslexia
Teaching Students with Dyslexia (TSD) Tier 3 Playberry Literacy Program for Dyslexia
According to teacher, author, workshop educator, podcaster and co-developer of the Playberry Literacy Multisensory Program, Bill Hansberry, dyslexia affects approximately 3 – 10% of learners in the population, with many students and their families left to manage with support from often non-specialist volunteers or teacher-aides that have little training in the area (https://www.hansberryec.com.au/dyslexia).
As a qualified trainer of the Playberry Tier 3 Multisensory Literacy program (Levels TSD 1, 2 and 3), I have found it is particularly well-suited to students ranging from Years 3 to 9. I believe it is preferably that students start in the primary years before homework commitments in high school significantly increase. In terms of the course itself, it usually takes 2 to 3 years to complete and involves a minimum of one-hour, weekly lessons.
During lessons, students are guided through a variety of activities, such as alphabet phonics drills, visual and auditory memory activities, reading cards (containing new phonemes introduced weekly), concept cards (include spelling rules and grammatical definitions), multisensory cursive writing/phonics tasks, weekly spelling and dictation tests and teaching point work booklets designed to develop the student’s literacy skills. The programme is approved by the ATO and does not attract a GST charge, which is great for parents!
