Adult (post-secondary) tuition – Literacy and Numeracy for Vocational and Academic Purposes
1. Essay Writing Skills and Proof-Reading
Students are shown how to write essays in either STEM subjects or teacher education at the tertiary level. Advice is provided on how to structure the essay, implement editing techniques, achieve the desired word count and write a bibliography. Proof-reading of essays can be performed upon request.
2. Study and Organisational Skills
Students are introduced to a wide range of study techniques, such as flash cards, mind maps, Cornell noting methods and active recall for examination preparation. These strategies are underpinned by the psychology of learning with a key focus on the ideas of metacognition, linear and lateral thinking and prioritising time and energy levels. Advice is provided on how to develop a workable study timetable to manage deadlines of assessment items.
3. LANTITE (Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education)
Pre-service teachers are guided through a series of literacy and numeracy tasks designed to enhance their proficiency and confidence in preparation for the compulsory LANTITE. Students with difficulties in either area are provided with direct explicit instruction in areas of weakness with homework tasks being a central part of ongoing learning.
